The House of Photography was opened on 16th March 1996 as the onlyspecialized institution of its kind in Slovakia. It was founded in cooperationwith Tatranska galeria in Poprad and major Slovak bank - Investicna a rozvojova banka, based on conception and design of Lucia Benicka, curator of the House of Photography. It is concerned with regular photo-exhibitions, publishing & editorial, documentation & slide archive, photographic collection within contemporary and historical photography and various educational programs.

CECIL BEATON (1904-1980) - DANDY PHOTOGRAPHER

This British Council touring exhibition of 48 modern prints traces at House of Photography Beaton's career as 'dandy' photographer, concentrating on his treatment of glamour and artifice from the time of his introduction to photography as a young boy, right up until his last works of pop-stars, artists and the literati in the late sixties. Selected by Philipe Garner, curator of Beaton's archive at Sotheby's -London, exhibition thematically presents Beaton's development over fifty years of his long career. The emphasis in the current selection is on Beaton's relationship to art, history and taste. Thematic groups include ARCADIAN IIDYLLS, FASHION AND HOLLYWOOD, HIGH STYLE, HISTORICAL PAGEANTS and concludes with portraits of the rich and famous in the Sixties and Seventies - series NEW BOHEMIA (Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, Gilbert&George).

NEW NAMES IN CONTEMPORARY SLOVAK DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY:
JOZEF ONDZIK, TOMAS LENO, MARTIN KOLLAR, LUBOS GROCH Curator Lucia Benicka introduces four emerging Slovak documentary photographers. Jozef ONDZIK (1964) and Tomas LENO (1964) present documentary & anthropological series on ethnical minority from Eastern Slovakia under title "RUSINI". Cameraman Martin KOLLAR (1971) has been working with film industry over last few years. His work has not been seen yet - it is a subjective diary from his travels and filming. Lubos GROCH (1964) focuses on "PEOPLE IN THE CROWDS" - he is documenting Slovak political culture and meetings over last five years.

SLOVAK POLITICIANS IN JOURNALISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY
In cooperation with major Slovak daily newspapers and weekly news the House of Photography is organizing premiere of exhibition, aiming to introduce Slovak politicians through the lenses of well-known journalistic photographers. In the end of oppressive political era, the show will cover last five years of politics. Curators: Lucia Benicka, Dr.Jan Lofaj

NEW NAMES IN CONTEMPORARY SLOVAK FINE-ARTS PHOTOGRAPHY: JANA SZUCSOVA, VLADO ELIAS, VIKTOR KOPASZ
Premiere of works by young Slovak photographers. Jana SZUCSOVA (1968) is presenting B&W series, tracing her intimate feelings and search of indentity. Vlado ELIAS (1972) will show new photographic digital series, focused on details of casual things - creating metaphors. Viktor KOPASZ (1972) is stag- ging images - his last "JUNGLE" series is a modern fairy-tale. Curator: Lucia Benicka
