International Airport Poprad-TatryFrom the history to presentBasic technical factsRegular and special charter passenger flights, private and sport airplanes, foreign and domestic aeroclubs, rescue and hospital flights, test and demonstration flights, sightseeing flights, cargo flights, technical and refueling stops and others are all welcome to use the services of the Poprad-Tatry Airport.
At present, no regular links exist to Poprad. The Slovak national airline plans regular flights to Moscow starting 19 December 1998 (2 flights weekly), and the renewal of a domestic link to Bratislava is being negotiated. In summer, the Poprad-Tatry Airport drawns many private airplanes, mostly from aeroclubs in Austria and Germany. Natives of Slovakia use it as a starting point for easy air journey for holidays at the Mediterranean and Black Seas. In winter, more foreign tourists take advantage of the airport as they come for the snows of the Low and High Tatras. The Poprad-Tatry Airport also serves as the base for the air rescue service operating the Krystof 03 offered by Air Transport Europe. A state-of-the-art Eurocopter AS355 Ecureuil II helicopter performs not only in mountian accident cases, but also in traffic and workplace accidents or other emergency health needs up to 70 km away. Popular sightseeing flights in 3-seat Z43 and Cessna C-172s are offered by Aeroklub Poprad and TLS Air.
The airport is 5 km from Poprad-Tatry bus and train station, and only 2 km from international route E85. The terminal building, last reconstructed in 1993, is designed to serve planes with capacity up to 200 passengers (Tupolev TU-154, Boeing 727, 757). Annual capacity stands of 200,000 passengers, with the record for one day (in 1998) at 1672 passengers. Travellers will find a snack bar, duty-free shop, and, during foreign charter arrivals in winter, a currency exchange.
