Large-cabin cableway
This aerial system is one of the finest cableways not only in the
Tatras but in this part of the world.
History
1934 in Slovakia (then part of the Czechoslovak Republic) saw the
decision to build a hanging aerial tramway from
Tatranska Lomnica to
the peak Lomnicky Stit. The actual construction, after the laying
of access routes, began on 8 May 1936, with the establishment of the
lower station in Tatranska Lomnica.
Building work started on the
way-station of Start on 11 June 1936, and on the Skalnate Pleso
station on 10 July 1936. Concurrently with this "Section 1" work,
construction was initiated on the higher Section 2 between Skalnate
Pleso and Lomnicky Stit.
After overcoming many difficulties, Section 1 (Tatranska Lomnica-
Skalnate Pleso) started operations on 22 December 1937. Section 2
(Skalnate Pleso-Lomnicky Stit) was opened to the public on
19 December 1941.
Present
The large-cabin cableway has experienced changes in its lifetime,
such as the replacement of its cabins. However, the lower Section 1
essentially still operates in its original form. The upper Section 2
underwent a major reconstruction, and the original equipment was
completely exchanged with new technology form the Swiss company
Von Roll. The new version opened to the public on 24 June 1989.
Though the cabin capacity was not changed, the new fixtures brought
a greater measure of safety and passenger comfort -- and in fact
increased overall capacity, by decreasing the amount of travel time
for each run.
Today, this cableway brings passengers and freight to both Skalnate
Pleso and Lomnicky Stit. Apart from High Tatras visitors, it also
serves workers of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and Mountain
Rescue Service, stationed in high mountain workplaces.
