Wolker Therapeutic Centre for Tuburculosis and Respiratory Disorders, Tatranská Polianka

Tatranská Polianka lies on the southern side of the valley Velicka dolina, at an altitude of 1005 m above sea level. It boasts the High Tatras' tallest peak, "Gerlach". Coniferous forests, alpine climate, clean air, mountain trails and scenic bluffs are among the treasures of the national park which embraces Tatranská Polianka.

Part of this settlement is Wolkrov Therapeutic Centre, with its century of tradition.Originally, most of its patients came for treatment of Basedow's disease; it also successfully treated (( látkovej výmeny )) and dermatologic psoriasis. Gradually, respiratory patients became the focus. Between 1950 and 1974, therapy centred on pulmonary tuberculosis, and since 1975 on non-specific lung and respiratory disoders. This 300-bed centre is now among the most sought-after of medical facilities, particularly in the area of bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis. Each year some 3000 patients undergo productive therapy here.
